When an animal is born, he/she receives basic immunization protection through their mother’s milk. Once they are weaned, they lose that protection and then become susceptible to many illnesses. This is where we come into play protecting your pet by starting them on a vaccine schedule every 3 weeks until they are approximately 16 -18 weeks old. The reason for the boosters; the animal must build up their immune system until it matures. Once the series of vaccines are complete we recommend yearly vaccines once they are adults.
During your pet’s preventative wellness visit at Ayers Animal Hospital, our team will make sure your pet has a complete physical exam also update their vaccines, check for intestinal parasites, talk about heartworm, flea, tick preventions and answer any questions you may have about your pet’s health. We know our lives are busy and keeping up with your pet’s vaccines may be hard, but we will make that easy for you by sending you a postcard via postal and/or email when it’s time for their annual vaccines are due.
Many pet owners maybe concerned about the safety of pet vaccines. That vaccines can cause harmful side effects. Like all medications, there is a small risk of an allergic reaction, but possibility is low and if your pet does have an allergic reaction we can spread the vaccines out and also do vaccine titers to make sure your pet has enough titers for protection. They are more at risk without vaccines and affects you more financially. No matter if your pet is indoor only they must be vaccinated especially against Rabies not only for your safety, but it also the law. For example, if your pet contracts Rabies, that pet must be euthanized and you, your family or friends who have been around the pet must go through the painful and extensive series of Rabies shots yourself. Rabies is a fatal disease so we want your pets to live a long, happy life. So routine vaccines are a must!
